Hardwood Floor Recoating
Your floors do not need to be sanded down to look great again. If the wood is solid but the finish is worn, dull, or scratched at the surface level, a professional recoat is all it takes. Most jobs completed in six hours, starting at $2.00 per square foot.
The Smart Alternative
What Is Hardwood Floor Recoating?
Hardwood floor recoating is the process of applying a fresh layer of finish over your existing floor without sanding down to bare wood. We lightly abrade the current finish to create adhesion, then apply a new coat of Bona Traffic HD - the most durable water-based finish available on the market today.
Recoating is the right call when your floors have surface-level wear, a dull appearance, or light scratches that have not broken through to the wood itself.
Fast turnaround.
Most recoating jobs are completed within six hours. Your floors are ready for light foot traffic within 24 hours - far less disruption than a full refinish.
Significant cost savings.
Recoating starts at $2.00 per square foot, a fraction of the cost of a full refinish. No sanding to bare wood and no stain application means less time and less labor.
Bona Traffic HD finish.
We use Bona Traffic HD exclusively - the hardest water-based finish on the market. Your refreshed floor will hold up to daily life far longer than a standard recoat product.
Even sheen, wall to wall.
High-traffic areas lose their sheen while the rest of the floor stays consistent. A recoat restores an even, uniform finish across the entire surface.
How We Work
Our Recoating Process
Floor Assessment
We evaluate your floors in person, check the finish condition, measure scratch depth, and confirm that recoating is the right option for your specific situation.
Prep and Masking
We move furniture if needed and hang plastic where needed to seal off doorways and adjacent spaces. Vents stay open to keep conditioned air circulating. We run air scrubbers with external filters on your air returns to keep the rest of your home clean throughout the process.
Screening
We lightly abrade the existing finish using a buffer and screen pad, creating the mechanical adhesion the new topcoat needs to bond properly. This step does not remove stain or damage the wood.
Tack and Clean
We thoroughly tack and clean the floor to remove all dust and debris from the screening process before any finish is applied.
Bona Traffic HD Application
We apply one to two coats of Bona Traffic HD using a T-bar applicator for a consistent, even result across the entire surface.
Final Inspection
We inspect the finished floor under good lighting and walk you through the result before we leave.

Frequently Asked Questions
Recoating is the process of applying a fresh layer of finish over your existing floor without sanding down to bare wood. We lightly abrade the current finish to create adhesion, then apply a new coat of Bona Traffic HD. It is ideal for floors where the wood is in good shape but the finish is dull, worn, or lightly scratched.
Refinishing involves sanding the floor down to bare wood and applying new stain and finish - a full restoration. Recoating adds a new topcoat without sanding to bare wood. Recoating is faster and less expensive, but it cannot change the stain color or address damage that has penetrated the wood itself.
Recoating starts at $2.00 per square foot - a fraction of the cost of a full refinish, because there is no sanding to bare wood and no stain application involved. We provide written estimates after a free assessment.
Most recoating jobs are completed within six hours. Your floors are ready for light foot traffic within 24 hours and back to full use shortly after, depending on the finish system.
Your floors are good candidates for recoating if the finish is dull or lightly scratched but the damage has not broken through to the wood itself. If scratches have penetrated the wood, or if you want to change the stain color, refinishing is the right option. We assess this during a free in-home visit.
We use Bona Traffic HD exclusively for recoating - the hardest water-based finish on the market. Your refreshed floor will hold up to daily life far longer than a standard recoat product.
Most hardwood floors benefit from a recoat every 3 to 5 years depending on traffic, pets, and maintenance habits. Regular recoating extends the life of your floor and reduces how often a full refinish is needed.
