Bona PowerDrive planetary sander refinishing oak hardwood floor Clayton NC

Clayton, NC and the Triangle

Hardwood Floor Sanding

Professional floor sanding with equipment fewer than 2% of contractors own. Lagler Hummel, Bona PowerDrive, and Festool HEPA dust containment. Virtually dustless. The foundation of every great refinish job.

Professional Grade Equipment

Sanding That Actually Gets It Flat

Most flooring contractors rent their equipment. We own professional-grade Lagler and Bona systems that produce a flat, consistent cut from the center field to the edges. The difference shows in the finished floor.

Our Bona PowerDrive edge sander is owned by fewer than 2% of flooring contractors. It eliminates the swirl marks and transition lines that are the telltale signs of amateur sanding work.

Virtually dustless process.

Festool HEPA vacuums, dust separators, and air scrubbers capture dust at the source. We seal off doorways and vents so the rest of your home stays clean.

Consistent edge-to-field blending.

The Bona PowerDrive produces a scratch-free edge that blends seamlessly with the main field. No visible sanding lines or swirl marks.

Multiple grit progression.

We work through progressively finer grits to remove all previous scratches and level the surface before any finish is applied.

Wear layer assessment first.

We measure every floor before sanding to confirm there is adequate wear layer remaining. We will not sand a floor that cannot support another round.

What We Use

Our Sanding Equipment

Professional-grade equipment that most contractors do not own. The right tools for a flat, consistent, virtually dustless result.

Main Field Sander

Lagler Hummel

The gold standard drum sander used by professional floor refinishers worldwide. Delivers a flat, consistent cut across the main field of the floor with minimal chatter or wave.

Edge Sander

Bona PowerDrive

Owned by fewer than 2% of flooring contractors. The PowerDrive produces a consistent, scratch-free edge that blends seamlessly with the field, eliminating the swirl marks left by traditional edge sanders.

Detail Sander

Lagler Flip

Handles tight spaces, closets, and transitions that the drum sander cannot reach. The Flip gives us precise control in areas where other sanders would cause damage.

Dust Containment

Festool HEPA System

Every sander connects to Festool HEPA vacuums and dust separators. Combined with doorway masking and air scrubbers, our dust containment delivers a virtually dustless process that protects your home and family.

PowerDrive on Pine

Pine Floor Refinishing at Flowers Plantation

Time lapse of the PowerDrive working through a pine hardwood floor refinishing job at Flowers Plantation in Clayton, right in our backyard. Pine is one of the most unforgiving species to sand. Its dramatic grain variation between soft and hard rings makes dish-out a constant risk with drum sanders. The PowerDrive's planetary heads rotate simultaneously in opposite directions, removing material evenly across both grain types and eliminating that problem entirely.

Flowers Plantation homeowners trust us because we have been working in this community since it was built. We know these floors.

The First Cut

Lagler Hummel on a Red Oak Strip Floor

The first cut sets the plane of the floor. Get it wrong and nothing that follows can fix it. We run the Lagler Hummel on the diagonal first, cutting across the grain to flatten the floor and remove any cupping, crowning, or unevenness before finish sanding begins.

The Hummel is the gold standard drum sander in the industry. Built in Germany, engineered for precision, unmatched in its ability to remove old finish and level a floor without gouging or leaving chatter marks. This is not a machine you hand to someone without training. In the wrong hands it removes too much material too fast. In the right hands it sets up a floor for a finish that looks like glass under raking light.

How We Work

Our Sanding Process

01

Free In-Home Assessment

We evaluate your floors in person, measure the wear layer, identify problem areas, and confirm that sanding is the right approach. You get a clear written estimate and timeline before any work begins.

02

Prep and Masking

Furniture is moved out of the work area. We hang plastic where needed to seal off doorways and adjacent spaces. We keep vents open so the conditioned air continues to circulate, and we run air scrubbers with external filters on your air returns to capture fine dust before it moves through the system.

03

Nail and Staple Check

We inspect the entire floor for exposed fasteners and countersink anything that could damage our equipment. Any squeaky boards are addressed before sanding begins.

04

Main Field Sanding

We sand the main field with the Lagler Hummel, working through progressively finer grits to achieve a flat, smooth surface ready for stain and finish.

05

Edge and Detail Sanding

The Bona PowerDrive sands the entire floor, flattening and refining the scratch pattern across the open field. The Lagler Flip and Festool Rotex 150 handle the perimeter along the walls where the big machine cannot reach. Every square foot of the floor receives the same level of attention.

06

Tack and Inspect

We vacuum the entire surface thoroughly, then tack it clean to remove any remaining fine dust. The floor is then inspected under good lighting for scratches, sanding marks, or missed areas before any stain or finish is applied.

Solid hardwood floors can typically be sanded 5 to 8 times over their lifetime depending on the thickness of the wear layer. We measure your wear layer during the free assessment to confirm sanding is viable before committing to any work.

The Bona PowerDrive is a gear-driven planetary sander that sands the entire floor, getting within 1.5 inches of the wall. Its multiple heads rotate simultaneously in different directions, producing a flatter surface while removing less material per pass than a drum sander. Fewer than 2% of flooring contractors in the country own one.

No. You never have to leave your home. The work area should have minimal foot traffic during the job, and needs to stay clear when we are actively applying stain or finish and while those coats are drying. Outside of those windows, the rest of the house stays fully accessible. We will walk you through exactly what to expect at each stage before we start.

Sanding typically takes two days. Staining (if applicable) takes half a day, and finish coats follow on subsequent days. The full refinishing project is typically 4 to 5 days from start to finish.

Some engineered hardwood products can be sanded, but it depends on the wear layer thickness. We assess this during the free in-home visit and will tell you upfront whether sanding is viable or whether a different approach is more appropriate.
